Until I found Rich at Briarville I was lost trying to locate a good and reliable pipe repair company. It’s very easy to fill out work orders and a few weeks later my pipes are returned repaired and or restored for a very fair price. Thanks Rich!

Well I had the chance to visit the Briarville shop in Elijay GA and meet Rich. I made an appointment with Rich and took him 5 pipes that needed new stems. I had 4 pipes that are over 30 years old and I lost the stems after many moves in the AF and Government service. I had one with a bamboo piece that had the stem broke off and it needed repair. We picked out the type of stem I wanted and then the colors to go with the color of the briar on the bowl. I must say that his selection to colors and types of stems was amazing. The shop was immaculate and an excellent work space for a artisan like Rich. I found Rich to be knowledgable, friendly and a true professional. Oh yes, he answered all my questions I had about pipes, tobacco, why I had trouble with moisture when I smoke and other items about shop equipment and pipe repairs. I got my pipes back and the colored stems looked terrific, the black P-lip looked like new. My bamboo broken piece was completely fixed and they were all ready to smoke. Rich even shined them up for me before I picked them up. I must of hit him up on a slack few days as I had my 5 pipes back in one day. Folks let me say that Rich should be every pipe smokers go to guy for repairs and advice. His shop is immaculate, he has what appeared to be ample supplies to complete any task and has a positive attitude and a true desire to give each customer with the best service possible.
Recently found two pipes at an antique store: an old Astley’s and an unsmoked Kaywoodie Supergrain. The Astley’s had some rim char and the stem was, in my opinion, rough. The Kaywoodie was in decent shape but needed a little TLC… These guys are awesome. Both pipes came back [quickly] and each one looks brand new. Will definitely use again. While the Kaywoodie Supergrain came back beautiful, I’m posting pics of the Astley’s due to the transformation.

I was so impressed with Rich from Briarville. I sent him a dozen pipes that needed various aspects of restoration. The quality of his work is unmatched in my experience over the years. I feel like I’ll never need to look for another source to be the “mechanic” of my pipes. Briarville is all I will ever need. Bravo!!

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Briarville, Inc is located in the USA, state of Georgia (South-Eastern USA) in the beautiful town of Ellijay. Our contact form is near the bottom of the web page.

We have an entire article written on our 10-Step Process that makes your Tobacco Pipe “Look Like New”. It’s a quick read so please check it out:

Clean the inside where the tobacco pipe stem well. Next, take a “very small” amount of super glue and swab it around the inside of the stem hole. This will soak in and cause the wood to “swell” slightly and the stem should fit tighter. If your tobacco pipe stem is too tight now, try a little wax or some fine sandpaper to loosen the fit.

Smoking tobacco pipes should cleaned at three intervals:

  • 1st: A basic tobacco pipe cleaning after each smoke
  • 2nd: An alcohol-based cleaning can be done every few smokes for a more thorough cleaning
  • 3rd: Your tobacco pipe should be disassembled and carefully cleaned once a month or so, depending on usage

If you have a tobacco pipe that has a crack in it, don’t worry – you can do an emergency repair to fix it!

  • Take a picture of the crack (to send to us later)
  • Use a small, thin object (paperclip or needle) to clean out the crack.
  • Get some super glue and put a small amount in the crack.
  • Quickly press the two pieces of the pipe together and hold them until the glue dries.
  • Take another picture of the repair. Send the before and after picture to us for a free quote.
  • Smoke your tobacco pipe to test your fix.
  • Once you receive our quote, send us your pipe for a professional restoration.

If you smoke between three-and-five tobacco pipe bowls each day, then four-to-six pipes should accommodate a tobacco pipe rotation according to the “24 Hour Rule.” After resting a tobacco pipe several days, that first bowl is often one of the best your tobacco pipe can ever offer.

For most tobacco pipe smokes is best to choose a classic straight Billiard or Apple pipe bowl shape. These shapes have been tried and tested for generations and are easy to smoke. One can also choose one of these that can be a slightly curved half-bent.

Many tobacco pipe smokers prefer to clean their glass with isopropyl alcohol, which is often paired with salt. This is a faster option than using vinegar and baking soda, but it is slightly harsher, so you must handle this cleaning process with care.

Some tobacco pipe smokers prefer a seven-day rotation. They set aside one pipe to smoke for each day of the week. That works fine if you only smoke is one bowl a day, but if you enjoy your pipe more often, then you should consider owning more tobacco smoking pipes.

A classic method of cleaning tobacco pipes is a mix of rubbing alcohol and salt. By combining isopropyl alcohol and course salt (kosher or table salt), you have a cleaning solution that is effective at cleaning a dirty tobacco pipe.

Tobacco pipe smoking can be a very relaxing experience for many. The process of packing and lighting the tobacco pipe, along with the act of drawing smoke through your tobacco pipe can be both meditative and create a sense of calm. When you light a tobacco pipe and sit down to smoke it, you can forget about your troubles and just relax.

Do not smoke your tobacco pipe too fast — you might get what experienced pipe smokers call “tongue bite,” a burning, irritated sensation across the top surface of your tongue. Pace yourself and puff at a leisurely pace and enjoy.

Often oxidized stems that look like the one pictured can be fully restored at around half the cost of a new replacement stem. Briarville offers both vulcanite and acrylic replacement stems. In keeping your costs down we primarily use pre-formed blanks that must be fitted to your pipe.

Parts of a smoking (tobacco) pipe include: (1) Bowl, (2) Chamber, (3) Draught Hole, (4) Shank, (5) Mortise, (T) tenon, (7) Stem, (8) Bit (or mouthpiece), (9) Lip, and (10) Bore.

A “Fisherman’s Head”, “Andreas Bauer”, block Meerschaum pipe in the fitted, satin-lined case could be worth in the $200 to $250 range.

Read Our Business Story & Learn Why We’re Here

“Find a Need And Fill It” is the hallmark of all successful businesses. Another hallmark is, “Turn A Problem Into An Advantage”. In late 2012 Ric Farrah, the founder of Briarville Tobacco Pipe Repair and Restoration, turned to both to create the industry leader in pipe repair.

First the problem. Farrah lost his corporate position as Director of Recruiting at a medium sized trucking company in Nashville, TN after the firm was sold. Seems the guy who bought the company had a nephew needing a job. Now without a gig Farrah turned to his roots over-the-road and signed on as a driver with a temp company serving the trucking industry. While deciding what to do next he vowed never again to put his career in another man’s hand. As the story unfolds, you’ll see a problem will often lead to an equal or greater advantage.

In the 80s and 90’s the tobacco pipe industry was in a state of flux. Hand rolled cigars were quickly gaining popularity. The corner brick and mortar pipe shops were disappearing or ceding valuable retail real estate to “sticks”. Where you could once easily visit your neighborhood shop for great conversation, supplies, and repairs, these social establishments were simply fast fading into a bygone era. The community which would gather locally at the table or in overstuffed chairs in their locals for a bowl of their favorite tobacco and swap lies were now congealing online – this time worldwide. The pipe industry was moving out of the brick and mortars to the Internet. The pipe enthusiasts didn’t go away. The retail tobacco shops just changed direction; ergo the need.

In the early to mid 2000s a sort tobacco pipe renaissance of sorts was taking shape on YouTube. The YouTube Tobacco Pipe Collectors channel was gaining subscribers and growing as pipe enthusiasts were showing off their collections and independent pipe carvers had an audience in which to show off their wares. One of those pipe carvers was Nashville broadcaster, television weatherman, and Farrah’s brother-in-law, Joe Case, a woodworking hobbyist that turned to pipe making. Over time, Joe Case Pipes began gaining popularity on the channel and the pipe smokers were gaining more comfort doing business online.

Farrah, a longtime pipe enthusiast and hobbyist needing a real job and Case looking for growth and increased credibility within the industry collaborated and decided for a short time to throw in together and add a repair side to Joe Case Pipes to test the water. The cross promotion proved very effective and both companies’ reach expanded. The need was there. Fewer and fewer shops were doing pipe repairs. Most of the shops still around were just sending off repairs to the few repair shops that served these dying brick and mortars. Farrah came up with Briarville trademark “Pipe Repair as Close as Your Mailbox” and hit the ‘Net doing YouTube videos himself, mostly a tad silly but nevertheless offering useful tips in DIY pipe maintenance as well as where to send their smokers needing more work. The concept took off beyond any expectations. The quality of work and customer service coupled with the ease of doing business led to Briarville exploding growth and popularity.

The second generation of Briarville began in 2019 when Farrah retired and sold the concern to Rich Messineo. Rich, a retired pharmacist, joined the company in 2016 and rose to the position of lead technician in three short years. Messineo graduated from Florida State University in 1987, finished his pharmacy degree at Florida A&M School of Pharmacy in 1990 and is no stranger to business. From 2003 – 2010 Messineo owned and operated Hungry Trout Cigars with three locations from Utah to Florida.

When Rich Messineo bought out Briarville he used his chemistry knowledge to create three aftermarket products now available to the public. The first product called “No Oxi Oil” was developed to keep vulcanite stems from oxidizing, a problem that plagued pipe smokers since the advent of vulcanite. The second product is the only real product out there to actually remove oxidation from vulcanite easily and effectively. The third product is a pipe cleaner and sweetener, the same that is used in the Briarville shop daily. Since purchasing Briarville, Messineo added a third profit center adding his own brand of cigars. Teaming up a national wholesaler, all Briarville products are now available online at

As Briarville nears their 10th anniversary it safe to say that the once figment of Farrah’s imagination has grown to the leader of the industry. Briarville serves the global community with clients worldwide. There is no looking back. Expect Messineo to continue the exceptional growth and notoriety Briarville clients have enjoyed since the advent of Pipe Repair as Close as Your Mailbox TM.

This piece is dedicated to the memory of Joe Case. His kindness and support was instrumental in developing Briarville Tobacco Pipe Repair and Restoration.
